Michael Spears is an art photographer based between Brooklyn, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. His work is informed by street cultures, underground music, classic cinema, surfing and skateboarding.
After graduating college Michael worked as a cycle messenger, camera shop clerk and a film lab tech in Boston. Eventually Michael found work as a photographers assistant, then moved to the larger market of NYC.
He’s built an extensive photographic archive. Mostly documenting New York City, his friendships, interests and personal relationships. Obsessions include the figure, portraits, travel and spectacles of celebration. Mikes’ ideas center humor, joy, beauty, magic, spontaneity, vulgarity, voyeurism, and hidden details. .
